Vitamin Вс (folic acid)

Vitamin Вс (folic acid) is a feed additive for the production of compound feeds and premixes for farm animals, including poultry. It is used for enrichment and balancing of feeding diets with folic acid.

Functions of Folic Acid in the Body

Folic acid is actively involved in amino acid metabolism, helping to neutralize their potentially toxic levels. This is particularly important for maintaining cellular health and preventing the accumulation of harmful metabolic byproducts. Vitamin Bc is an indispensable component of many coenzymes that participate in various biochemical reactions.

One of the most important functions of folic acid is its role in preventing fatty infiltration of the liver, especially in cases of niacin excess. It promotes the synthesis of phospholipids, which are key structural components of cell membranes, thereby ensuring the normal functioning of liver cells.

Folic acid is also essential for the normal activity of the gastrointestinal tract mucosa. A healthy GI tract ensures efficient digestion and nutrient absorption, directly impacting animal growth and development.

The vitamin plays a significant role in the synthesis of amine and nucleic acids. Amine acids are the building blocks of proteins, while nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) carry genetic information and participate in protein synthesis. Thus, folic acid is fundamental for growth, tissue regeneration, and heredity.

Alongside Vitamin B12, folic acid is absolutely necessary for the formation process of red and white blood cells. These cells play a decisive role in oxygen transport and the body’s immune defense. A deficiency in either of these vitamins can lead to serious hematological problems. Folic acid also plays a significant role in the functioning of bone marrow, where all blood cells are formed. It is worth noting that the conversion of folic acid into its active form is influenced by the availability of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), highlighting the interconnectedness of various vitamins in the body.

Consequences of Folic Acid Deficiency

Folic acid deficiency in animals and poultry can lead to a number of serious health problems, significantly reducing their productivity and well-being.

  • Reduced appetite and stunted growth: These are among the first and most noticeable signs of deficiency, indicating a general disruption of metabolic processes.
  • Hematological changes: Characteristic changes in the blood include macrocytic anemia (enlarged red blood cells with insufficient hemoglobin), leukopenia (decreased white blood cell count), and thrombocytopenia (decreased platelet count). These conditions significantly weaken the immune system and the blood’s clotting ability.
  • Reproductive disorders: Folic acid deficiency can negatively impact the fertility and reproductive capacity of animals.
  • Hair depigmentation: Some animals may experience changes in fur or feather color.
  • Reduced digestive enzyme activity: This exacerbates problems with digestion and nutrient absorption, creating a vicious cycle.

Sources of Folic Acid and the Need for Supplements

Animals can obtain folic acid not only through feed but also as a result of microbiological synthesis in the gastrointestinal tract. However, especially during the rearing of poultry and young animals, the amounts of the vitamin synthesized in this way often do not cover their body’s needs. This means that to ensure optimal growth, development, and health, animals require special vitamin supplements in their feed.

Feed Grade Vitamin Bc

Feed grade Vitamin Bc is a supplement designed to compensate for folic acid deficiency in animal diets. It contains folic acid as the active ingredient at a concentration of (96.0 – 96.5) %. It appears as a yellow-orange powder that is sparingly soluble in water. Importantly, it does not contain genetically modified organisms.

Feed grade Vitamin Bc is typically incorporated into premixes, complete feeds, or feed raw materials at specialized feed mills or on-farm feed preparation units, using standard dry feed additive mixing technologies. This supplement is compatible with all feed ingredients, medicinal preparations, vitamins, and other feed additives, making it convenient to use. When used in accordance with the instructions for use, no adverse events or complications have been reported, confirming its safety and effectiveness.

Active ingredient: folic acid.
