Magnesium oxide (MgO) feed grade is a feed additive used in the production of compound feeds and premixes for farm animals. It is applied to enrich and balance animal diets with magnesium.
Magnesium is a biologically active macronutrient that plays a vital role in the body. It activates many physiological reactions: enhances the action of trypsin, stimulates the activity of intestinal peptidases, pancreatic lipases, and several other enzymes. Magnesium helps maintain normal acid-base balance and osmotic pressure in body fluids and tissues, influences the functional capacity of the neuromuscular system, participates in thermoregulation, and is essential for rumen digestion. It is also involved in carbohydrate and fat metabolism, protein biosynthesis, and impacts bone calcification and egg formation in birds.
Magnesium Oxide Feed Additive
Magnesium deficiency causes metabolic disorders, leading to high mortality in animals and stimulating the parathyroid glands. In pigs, it can result in increased nervous excitability, unsteady gait, ataxia, and tetanic convulsions. Calves show similar symptoms, often resulting in death. In chickens and ducks, deficiency leads to loss of appetite, poor feathering, delayed growth, and cardiac arrhythmia. Muscle tone decreases, ataxia and seizures occur, calcium salts accumulate in the kidneys and heart, and death is common.
Magnesium oxide is highly effective in absorbing gases in the gastrointestinal tract, and therefore is used in veterinary medicine for intestinal flatulence and bloat. It is included in feed formulations and compound feeds where magnesium supplementation is required. The additive is particularly recommended for use in farms with cases of fluoride intoxication.
