Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) belongs to the group of fat-soluble vitamins and plays a crucial role in preventing rickets and ensuring proper, age-appropriate bone growth in animals. This vitamin is vital for regulating calcium and phosphorus metabolism, maintaining normal calcification, and consequently, the strength of bones. Therefore, Vitamin D3 is an indispensable vitamin for keeping bone tissue in a normal state in farm animals, including poultry, fish, cats, and dogs. It is often the most deficient vitamin in natural feeds.
Vitamin D3 Deficiency
The need for Vitamin D in animals directly depends on the intake and presence of calcium and phosphorus in their bodies, as well as the species, age, and productivity of the animals and poultry. When calcium and phosphorus intake is insufficient or their ratio in the diet is suboptimal, the body’s need for Vitamin D increases. Vitamin D deficiency most commonly occurs during the winter and winter-spring periods, when feed contains practically no Vitamin D, and sunlight exposure is insufficient for its synthesis in the body. The lowest Vitamin D requirement is observed when the Ca:P ratio is 1.2-1.5:1.
A lack of Vitamin D in the diets of young animals inhibits the development of the reproductive system, and in cows, it disrupts the estrous cycle and reduces milk production. Characteristic signs of Vitamin D deficiency also include insufficient calcium accumulation in developing bone tissues (rickets), decreased mineralization of bone tissues (osteodystrophy), bone and joint deformation, growth impairment, spontaneous bone fractures, and increased eggshell fragility in laying hens (“soft-shelled eggs”).
Feed Grade Vitamin D3 Composition
Feed grade Vitamin D3 contains the active substance Vitamin D3 at no less than 500,000 IU (15%) per gram. It appears as a powder ranging from white to yellow.
Application of Feed Grade Vitamin D3
Feed grade Vitamin D3 is used for the production of premixes and compound feeds to enrich the diets of farm animals, including poultry, fish, cats, and dogs, with Vitamin D3. It is incorporated into premixes, compound feeds, and feed mixtures at feed mills or on-farm feed preparation units, using existing step-by-step mixing technologies. The amount of Vitamin D3 added depends on the feed composition, as well as the species and age of the farm animals, poultry, fish, cats, and dogs.
When feed grade Vitamin D3 is used in recommended quantities, no side effects or complications have been observed. It is compatible with all feed ingredients, feed additives, and medicinal products.
