Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a member of the water-soluble vitamin group. It supports a stable redox (oxidation-reduction) system in the body, indirectly regulates biochemical reactions and protein synthesis, and stimulates collagen production. It catalyzes oxidation processes, participates in the synthesis of steroid hormones, conserves folic acid, influences sulfur metabolism, and exhibits detoxifying effects against toxins and poisons. Vitamin C also helps prevent atherosclerosis and contributes to lowering blood cholesterol levels. It is involved in adrenaline metabolism, DNA formation, and activates enzyme functions.

Vitamin C is a key anti-stress factor and helps compensate for deficiencies of vitamins A, E, B1, B12, B3, and Bc. This partial substitution effect is likely due to the antioxidant properties of ascorbic acid. However, insufficient intake of vitamins A and E can suppress vitamin C synthesis.

Vitamin C Deficiency

The most characteristic sign of vitamin C deficiency is the body’s reduced ability to store intercellular “cementing substances”, which leads to damage to blood vessels and connective tissues. In animals, vitamin C deficiency increases susceptibility to infectious diseases. In fish, spontaneous mucosal bleeding is observed. In laying hens, heat stress may occur, resulting in reduced eggshell strength.

The requirement for vitamin C strongly depends on environmental factors, including climate, diet changes, stressors, transportation conditions, and parasite infestation levels.

Supplementation with vitamin C reduces the negative effects of overheating, improves eggshell quality, and increases egg production. Its administration can alleviate or eliminate stress-related declines in productivity.

Feed-Grade Vitamin C

Feed-grade vitamin C contains ascorbic acid synthesized by chemical methods – at least 4.5%, with no less than 35% of active vitamin C. It appears as a white to yellowish powder.

Application of Vitamin C

Feed-grade vitamin C is used in the production of premixes and compound feeds for livestock and poultry, as well as pet food for dogs and cats. It is added to premixes and feeds at premix and compound feed plants. Vitamin C is compatible with all compound feed ingredients, medications, other vitamins, and feed additives. No side effects or complications have been observed when used according to the instructions for use.

Active ingredient: L-ascorbyl-monophosphate, L-ascorbate-2-phosphate.
